After discovering that I clench and/or grind my teeth at night, my dentist suggested I try an OTC mouthguard before paying for a custom-made version. I originally tried Doctors productDoctor’S Nightguard Advanced Comfort, 1 Box that you mold to your bite by boiling the guard. It was horribly uncomfortable and felt at times like it was throwing my bite off.
I decided to try the Plackers brand since it was so cheap and advertised as disposable. I’ve worn it on my bottom teeth for the past few months and it seems to be holding up quite well. The main problem is that the front tends to irritate the gumline below my front bottom teeth.
I still may look into a custom-made guard in the future for increased comfort.

|Great for all sizes,
After having too many problems with my expensive custom bite guard, I tried the “mold it yourself” one. Not much better. I saw one of these in the dollar store of all places, and decided it was worth a dollar to try. Surprisingly, this little implement worked like a charm. You can wear it on your upper or lower, I chose the lower and the fit was great with my small mouth. Very comfortable, and I don’t feel as if I have a mouth full of equipment. They are like gel pads that sit on your molars. That’s exactly where I grind, but if you have a different pattern, not all of your teeth may be protected.
If you straighten one out, it is almost 4″ from end to end. Each end pad is 3/4″ long.

This product does work to minimize damage from night-time grinding of teeth. It isn’t bulky like the kind you have to boil and fit to your teeth. The only drawback I can give it is that it does seem to re-align my teeth during the night, and it takes several hours to half a day for the bite to feel normal again. I don’t know if that’s avoidable, and not sure whether it’s better to move your teeth or crack them in the night. For anyone concerned about choking on this thing like I was, that is not an issue at all.
